7 Product Photography Tips That Will Double Your Sales

OpenVendi Blog ยท May 2026

Online shoppers cannot pick up your product, smell it, or feel the texture. Your photos do all of that work. Great photography increases click-through rates, builds trust, and directly boosts conversions. You do not need expensive equipment โ€” you need good technique.

1. Use Natural Light

Natural light from a north-facing window is your best free resource. Overcast days are ideal โ€” clouds diffuse the light and eliminate harsh shadows. Direct sunlight creates blown-out highlights and dark shadows. If you shoot at night, use two soft-box LED lights at 45-degree angles on either side of your product.

2. Keep Backgrounds Clean and Consistent

White backgrounds make products pop and look professional. Dark backgrounds work beautifully for metallic jewelry and glassware. Natural textures like linen and wood add warmth for lifestyle shots. Whatever you choose, stay consistent across your shop โ€” a cohesive visual style builds brand recognition.

3. Fill the Frame

Your product should take up 80-90% of the image. Do not leave excessive empty space. Shoot at the same height as the product โ€” not looking down on it. Place your subject slightly off-center using the rule of thirds for a more dynamic composition.

4. Show Multiple Angles

Shoot front, back, side, top, and close-up detail shots. Buyers cannot touch the item so your photos need to answer every question. For items where size matters, include a hand, coin, or ruler in at least one photo.

5. Use a Tripod

Camera shake is the most common cause of blurry product photos. A $15 phone tripod eliminates it entirely and is essential for sharp close-up shots. A modern smartphone camera is sufficient โ€” you do not need a DSLR.

6. Shoot a Detail Close-Up

One macro close-up highlighting your craftsmanship often converts browsers into buyers. The texture of ceramic glaze, stitching on leather, hand-stamped silver detail โ€” these shots justify your price and differentiate handmade from mass-produced.

7. Edit for Accuracy, Not Filters

Use your phone's built-in editor or free apps like Lightroom Mobile or Snapseed. Increase brightness slightly, boost contrast a touch, and correct white balance so colors look true to life. Heavy filters mislead buyers about product color and lead to returns and bad reviews.
