How to Write Product Descriptions That Sell

OpenVendi Blog ยท May 2026

Your product description has one job: turn a browser into a buyer. Most sellers write descriptions that describe the item but fail to sell it. Here is how to write copy that actually converts.

Lead With the Benefit, Not the Feature

Buyers do not buy features โ€” they buy outcomes and feelings. Instead of opening with what the item is made of, open with what it does for the buyer.

Instead of: "Hand-poured soy candle with cotton wick"
Try: "Fill your home with a warm, clean scent that lasts up to 50 hours โ€” no soot, no synthetic fragrance, just pure calm."

The features still belong in the description โ€” just after you have captured the buyer emotionally.

Use Sensory Language

Online buyers cannot touch, smell, or hold your item. Your words have to do that work. Describe texture, weight, scent, sound, and feel. A ceramic mug is not just "handmade" โ€” it is "slightly irregular in the most satisfying way, warm and weighty in your hands, with a smooth matte glaze that does not show fingerprints." Specific sensory details build trust and desire.

Structure Every Description the Same Way

Answer Every Question Before It Is Asked

Every question a buyer has to send you is a reason they might not buy. Anticipate them. How big is it? What is it made of? How do I care for it? Can I customize it? How long does shipping take? Will it fit a standard size? Put the answers in your description and you will convert more browsers without lifting a finger.

Include Search Keywords Naturally

Your description is indexed by search engines. Use the specific words buyers would type: material names, style descriptors, occasions, recipients. "Gifts for mom," "wedding favor," "nursery decor," "cottagecore aesthetic" โ€” these long-tail phrases bring in buyers who are already close to purchasing. Use them naturally in sentences, not as keyword lists.

Keep Paragraphs Short

Buyers skim, especially on mobile. Use short paragraphs of two to three sentences maximum. Use bullet points for specs and details. White space is your friend โ€” a description that looks easy to read gets read.
